c. AD. Holy Saturday commemorates The Harrowing Of Hell while
Jesus Christ's body lay in the tomb. Christians of the Catholic,
Lutheran, and Anglican denominations begin the celebration of The
Easter Vigil service on Holy Saturday, which provides a transition
to the season of Eastertide, the festal season that focuses on
celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the Moravian
Christian tradition, graves are decorated with flowers during the
day of Holy Saturday and the celebration of the sunrise service
starts before dawn on Easter Sunday. Congregations of the Reformed
and Methodist denominations may hold either the Easter Vigil or an
Easter Sunday sunrise service. The Harrowing Of Hell (Latin:
Descensus Christi Ad Inferos; "The Descent Of Christ Into
Hell", "The Descent Of Christ Into Hades") is the
period of time between the Crucifixion of Jesus and his
resurrection. In triumphant descent, Christ brought salvation to
the souls held captive there since the beginning of the world.
Christ's descent into the world of the dead is referred to in the
Apostles' Creed and the Athanasian Creed (Quicumque vult), which
state that he "descended into the underworld" (descendit
ad inferos), although neither mention that he liberated the dead.
His descent to the underworld is alluded to in the New Testament
in 1 Peter 4:6, which states that the "good tidings were
proclaimed to the dead". The Catechism Of The Catholic Church
notes Ephesians 4:9, which states that "[Christ] descended
into the lower parts of the earth", as also supporting this
interpretation. These passages in the New Testament have given
rise to differing interpretations. According to The Catholic
Encyclopedia, the story first appears clearly in the Gospel of
Nicodemus in the section called the Acts of Pilate, which also
appears separately at earlier dates within the Acts of Peter and
Paul. The descent into Hell had been related in Old English poems
connected with the names of Caedmon (e.g. Christ and Satan) and
Cynewulf. It is subsequently repeated in English abbot AElfric Of
Eynsham's homilies c. 1000 AD, which is the first known inclusion
of the word "harrowing". Middle English dramatic
literature contains the fullest and most dramatic development of
the subject. As a subject in Christian art, it is also known as
(Greek: "Resurrection"), considered a creation of
Byzantine culture and first appearing in the West in the early 8th
century. The Easter Vigil (Paschal Vigil, The Great Vigil Of
Easter, Holy Saturday At The Easter Vigil On The Holy Night of
Easter,)is a liturgy held in traditional Christian churches as the
first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus.
Historically, it is during this liturgy that people are baptized
and that adult catechumens are received into full communion with
the Church. It is held in the hours of darkness between sunset on
Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Day - most commonly in the
evening of Holy Saturday or midnight - and is the first
celebration of Easter, days traditionally being considered to
begin at sunset. Among liturgical Western Christian churches
including the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Churches and the
Anglican Communion, the Easter Vigil is the most important liturgy
of public worship and Mass of the liturgical year, marked by the
first use since the beginning of Lent of the exclamatory
"Alleluia" (Hebrew: "Praise Yah"), a
distinctive feature of the Easter season. In the Moravian Church,
the sunrise service starts before dawn on Easter Sunday.
Congregations of the Reformed tradition and the Methodist
tradition may observe the Easter Vigil or hold a sunrise service.
In Eastern Orthodox churches, Oriental Orthodox churches, and
other traditions of Eastern Christianity, the extremely festive
ceremonies and Divine Liturgy which are celebrated during the
Easter Vigil are unique to that night and are the most elaborate

keep you informed of important political news, businesses in your
community, weather, traffic, crime, and education updates. When it
comes to the national news, the local news reporters apply local
perspectives. While events may happen thousands of miles away, a
local newsperson knows it impacts their views still. On the
national and world scale, a newsperson may travel far and wide for
the complete story. Some are attached to certain regions of the
world, specializing in political, economic or health news.
Wherever they report from, they bring the news into our homes,
cars, businesses or where ever we may be. The people who bring the
news hold an important role in society and today is the day to

Awareness And Assistance In Mine Action: -- An annual observance
that recognizes the achievements of the global mine action
community and aims to raise awareness about landmines and
highlight their dangers. The holiday also seeks to bring attention
to other explosive remnants of war - as by bringing attention to
the devastation and harm they cause, we can ensure individuals and
communities can live and survive in a safe landmine-free
environment. On December 8, 2005, the General Assembly declared
that April 4 of each year would be the International Day for Mine
Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, and the ensuing century
paid tribute to the movement. The work of the United Nations Mine
Action Service (UNMAS) has been motivated by the needs of the
people affected by the threat of explosive hazards. For over 20
years, they have tailored their work to the threat of explosive
hazards faced by civilians, peacekeepers, and humanitarians.
However, aside from the United Nations, another major player in
the quest to eradicate landmines globally is the International
Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) - founded in 1992 and awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. It is a network in about 100 countries
that works for a world free of anti-personnel landmines, where
landmine survivors can lead fulfilling lives. "Safe Ground,
Safe Steps, Safe Home" is the theme for International Day For
Landmine Awareness And Assistance In Mine Action. It was launched
by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2019. The theme
refers to the concept of clearing the world of landmines and other
explosive hazards. It highlights the fear many people experience
when they walk across areas affected by war, unaware if they could
potentially detonate an explosive. The theme also describes the
work de-miners do when approaching sites that contain explosives
and includes the new technology to remove these hazards. "Safe
Home" is about restoring the security and community of

memoirist, playwright, screenwriter, and civil rights activist (d.
May 28, 2014) is #born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis,
Missouri. She published seven autobiographies, three books of
essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of
plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She
received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.
Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies,
which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The
first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life
up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and
acclaim. She became a poet and writer after a string of odd jobs
during her young adulthood. These included fry cook, pimp,
prostitute, sex worker, nightclub performer, Porgy and Bess cast
member, Southern Christian Leadership Conference coordinator, and
correspondent in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of
Africa. She was also an actress, writer, director, and producer of
plays, movies, and public television programs. In 1982, she was
named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake
Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was active
in the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martin Luther King
Jr. and Malcolm X. Beginning in the 1990s, she made approximately
80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she
continued into her eighties. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem "On
the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at the first inauguration of
Bill Clinton, making her the first poet to make an inaugural
recitation since Robert Frost at the inauguration of John F.
Kennedy in 1961. With the publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings, Angelou publicly discussed aspects of her personal life.
She was respected as a spokesperson for Black people and women,
and her works have been considered a defense of Black culture. Her
works are widely used in schools and universities worldwide,
although attempts have been made to ban her books from some U.S.
libraries. Angelou's most celebrated works have been labeled as
autobiographical fiction, but many critics consider them to be
autobiographies. She made a deliberate attempt to challenge the
common structure of the autobiography by critiquing, changing and
expanding the genre. Her books center on themes including racism,
identity, family and travel. Maya Angelou died in the morning of
natural causes in Winston-Salem, North Carolina after years of
heart ailments at the age of 86. Her remains were cremated, and
the ashes were scattered at Storm King Mountain on the west bank
of the Hudson River in the Hudson Highlands of New York State,

Premieres: -- Bryant's Minstrels debut the minstrel song "Dixie",
also known as "Dixie's Land", "I Wish I Was In
Dixie", and other titles, a song about the Southern United
States, at Mechanics' Hall at 472 Broadway (between Grand Street
and Broome Street) in New York City, appearing in the finale of
their blackface minstrel show. It is one of the most distinctively
Southern musical products of the 19th century. It was not a folk
song at its creation, but it has since entered the American folk
vernacular. The song likely rooted the word "Dixie" in
the American vocabulary as a nickname for the Southern U.S. Most
sources credit Ohio-born Daniel Decatur Emmett with the song's
composition, although other people have claimed credit, even
during Emmett's lifetime. Compounding the problem are Emmett's own
confused accounts of its writing and his tardiness in registering
its copyright. "Dixie" quickly became popular throughout
the United States. During the American Civil War, it was adopted
as a de facto national anthem of the Confederacy, along with "The
Bonnie Blue Flag" and "God Save The South". New
versions appeared at this time that more explicitly tied the song
to the events of the Civil War. The song was a favorite of
President Of The United States, Union Commander-In-Chief, and
Kentucky native Abraham Lincoln, who had it played at a number of
his political rallies, most poignantly at the announcement of

Grand Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Marshal Admiral of the Imperial
Japanese Navy (IJN), Commander-In-Chief of the Combined Fleet
during World War II until he was killed, military chief and top
strategist of the Japanese navy, who masterminded their successful
Pearl Harbor attack of December 7th 1941 and was defeated in their
failed attack on Midway Island in early June of 1942, a defeat
which turned the course of the war against Japan, just as and when
he warned that the tide of the war would turn against Japan (d.
April 18, 1943) is #born Isoroku Takano in Nagaoko, Honshu. He was
adamantly against his country attacking the United States to begin
with, having been a Harvard alumnus and accounting as his greatest
hero Abraham Lincoln, but once the Emperor sided with Yamamoto's
enemy General Tojo in support of an attack against America and
Great Britain, he declared "I am the sword of my Emperor"
and devoted himself to planning, organizing, directing and
controlling the Pearl Harbor attack plans, as well as its many
subsidiary operations against the US and UK. He was killed after
Americans intercepted and decoded radio reports of his whereabouts
- radio signals which may have been broadcast with the complicity
of Yamamoto's enemies in order to bring attention to them - and
then dispatched planes as part of Operation Vengeance to shoot his
plane down. His remains were cremated; after his ashes were
returned to Japan, he received one of the largest state funerals
since that of the esteemed Admiral Togo. Half of his ashes are
interred at Tokyo, Japan's Tama Cemetery, the largest municipal
cemetery in Japan, and the other half of his ashes were returned
to his hometown, Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, where they are
interred at the Chokoji Temple Cemetery. The pilot who got credit
for the shoot-down, Capt. Thomas George Lanphier, Jr., asserted he
did so when he simply cleared his guns during a head-on approach
of Yamamoto's plane, and to his surprise, Yamamoto's plane caught
fire and began to go down. Lanphier conducted follow-up attacks on
Yamamoto's crippled plane, and watched it dive in flames into the
jungle from low altitude. While maintaining pride in his
accomplisment, he came in later life to became a great admirer of
the Admiral, while understanding first-hand the tragedy of the
necessity to have to fight and kill him instead of his enemies. On

Kansas. Swayze first sought to work as an actor, but his activity
on Broadway ended when acting roles became scarce following the
Wall Street Crash Of 1929. John Cameron Swayze died in Sarasota,
Florida, aged 89. He is buried at Round Hill Community Cemetery in
Greenwich, Connecticut. Swayze and the actor-brothers Patrick

Langford, American singer, actress and beauty known as the "GI
Nightingale", an American armed forces sweetheart who often
with Bob Hope entertained troops during World War II, popular
during the Golden Age of Radio and who made film and television
appearances for over two decades (d. July 11, 2005) is #born Julia
Frances Newbern-Langford in Hernando, Florida. Langford originally
trained as an opera singer. While a young girl she required a
tonsillectomy that changed her soprano range to a rich contralto.
As a result, she was forced to change her vocal approach to a more
contemporary big band, popular music style. At age 17, she was
singing for local dances. Cigar manufacturer Eli Witt heard her
sing at an American Legion party and hired her to sing on a local
radio show he sponsored. Dan White and Langford were schoolmates,
and she first sang in public in an amateur show that White staged
in Lakeland, Florida. It was also White, who was now a seasoned
character actor in Hollywood, that suggested to Langford that she
go to Hollywood to give pictures a try. After a brief stint in the
Broadway musical "Here Goes the Bride" in 1931, she
moved to Hollywood, appearing on Louella Parsons' radio show
Hollywood Hotel while starting a movie career. Singing for radio
during the early 1930s she was heard by Rudy Vallee, who invited
her to become a regular on his radio show. From 1935 until 1938
she was a regular performer on Dick Powell's radio show. From 1946
to 1951, she performed with Don Ameche as the insufferable wife,
Blanche, on the radio comedy The Bickersons. Langford made her
film debut in Every Night at Eight (1935), introducing what became
her signature song: "I'm in the Mood for Love". She then
began appearing frequently in films such as Broadway Melody of
1936 (1935) (in which she popularized "Broadway Rhythm"
and "You Are My Lucky Star"), Born to Dance (1936), Too
Many Girls (1940) (in which she acted alongside her childhood
schoolmate from Lakeland Dan White), and Yankee Doodle Dandy
(1942) with James Cagney, in which (portraying Nora Bayes) she
performed the popular song "Over There". She also
appeared on screen in Dixie Jamboree and Radio Stars on Parade. In
1946 she played the torch-singing lead in The Bamboo Blonde,
showing off her ability to both vamp and act. In a Western movie,
Deputy Marshal, she co-starred with her first husband, matinee
idol Jon Hall. In several of Langford's films she appeared as
herself, as in Broadway Melody of 1936 and The Glenn Miller Story
(1953). In the latter film, she sang "Chattanooga Choo Choo"
with the Modernaires and the movie orchestra. From 1941, Langford
was a regular singer on Bob Hope's The Pepsodent Show when he held
his first military entertainment program at March Field in
Riverside, California in 1941. The show was so positive, he
continued broadcasting from training bases around the country and
asked Langford to join him. During World War II, she joined Hope,
Jerry Colonna, guitarist Tony Romano, and other performers on USO
tours through Europe, North Africa, and the South Pacific,
entertaining thousands of GIs throughout the world. During a USO
tour in the Pacific theater, she was invited to take a ride in a
P-38 fighter plane. During the flight, a Japanese ship was spotted
and the joy ride was postponed until the pilot finished strafing
the ship. In his memoir, Don't Shoot! It's Only Me!, Bob Hope
recalled how Frances Langford got the biggest laugh he had ever
heard. At a USO show in the South Pacific, Langford stood up on a
stage to sing before a huge crowd of GIs. When Langford sang the
first line of her signature song, "I'm in the Mood for Love,"
a soldier in the audience stood up and shouted, "You've come
to the right place, honey!" Also, during the war, Langford
wrote the weekly "Purple Heart Diary" column for Hearst
Newspapers, in which she described her visits to military
hospitals to entertain wounded GIs. She used the weekly column as
a means of allowing the recovering troops to voice their
complaints, and to ask for public support for making sure that the
wounded troops received all the supplies and comforts they needed.
Her association with Hope continued into the 1980s. In 1989 she
joined him for a USO tour to entertain troops in the Persian Gulf.
Langford worked for several years in the late 1940s on The Spike
Jones Show and starred in a short-lived DuMont variety show Star
Time (1950). As a guest on early television shows such as Perry
Como and Jackie Gleason she was motivated to venture into
television. She was the host of two self-titled variety television
programs. She then teamed with Don Ameche for the ABC television
program, The Frances Langford/Don Ameche Show (1951), a spin-off
of their successful radio series The Bickersons in which the duo
played a feuding married couple. Langford was also the host of the
NBC musical variety program Frances Langford Presents (1959),
which lasted one season, as did a later program The Frances
Langford Show (1960). Another notable appearance was in The
Honeymooners lost episode "Christmas Party" which first
aired December 19, 1953. Langford married three times, first to
actor Jon Hall (1934-55). In 1948, they donated 20 acres (81,000
m2) of land near her estate in Jensen Beach, Florida to Martin
County, which named it Langford Hall Park. In 1946, Langford was
honored by her hometown of Lakeland, Florida for her work with the
United Service Organizations and her music and acting career. The
city dedicated the Lake Mirror Promenade as the Frances Langford
Promenade. The promenade was built in 1928 and was designed by
renowned landscape architect Charles W. Leavitt. Langford
supported Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower during the 1952 U.S.
presidential election. After leaving Hollywood life, Langford
continued with her pastimes of boating and sport fishing. As a
nightclub singer in 1955, she married Outboard Marine Corporation
president Ralph Evinrude. They lived on her estate in Jensen Beach
and they built a Polynesian-themed restaurant and marina on the
Indian River named The Frances Langford Outrigger Resort, where
she frequently performed. In 1994, Langford married Harold C.
Stuart, former assistant secretary for civil affairs of the United
States Air Force (1949-1951) under President Harry S. Truman. They
spent summers in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada, traveling from
their home in Florida aboard their 110-foot yacht. Health problems
plagued Langford in the final years of her life, requiring
periodic hospital stays. She died at her Jensen Beach home at age
92 from congestive heart failure. According to her wishes, she was
cremated, and her ashes were strewn off the coast of Florida near
her residence. Langford has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame, one at 1500 Vine Street, which acknowledges her contribution
to motion pictures and one at 1525 Vine Street for her work in

regularly donated money to it. She also supported the Florida
Oceanographic Society located on Hutchinson Island. The site's

"some of the most recognizable and memorable themes in
Hollywood history", including over 150 original film scores,
as well as scores for nearly 80 television productions. For his
work he received an Academy Award for Thoroughly Modern Millie
(1967) and Primetime Emmy Award. He also received seven Golden
Globe Awards, five Grammy Awards, and two Tony Award nominations.
He composed and arranged scores for over 100 film scores,
including Sudden Fear (1952), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955),
The Ten Commandments (1956), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), The
Magnificent Seven (1960), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), The Great
Escape (1963), Hud (1963), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), True
Grit (1969), My Left Foot (1989), The Grifters (1990), Cape Fear
(1991), Twilight (1998), and Far from Heaven (2002). He is known

Allgemeine SS was responsible for enforcing the racial policy of
Nazi Germany and general policing, whereas the Waffen-SS consisted
of combat units within Nazi Germany's military. A third component
of the SS, the SS-Totenkopfverbande (SS-TV), ran the concentration
camps and extermination camps. Additional subdivisions of the SS
included the Gestapo and the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) organizations.
They were tasked with the detection of actual or potential enemies
of the Nazi state, the neutralization of any opposition, policing
the German people for their commitment to Nazi ideology, and
providing domestic and foreign intelligence. The SS was the
organization most responsible for the genocidal killing of an
estimated 5.5 to 6 million Jews and millions of other victims in
the Holocaust. Members of all of its branches committed war crimes
and crimes against humanity during World War II. The SS was also
involved in commercial enterprises and exploited concentration
camp inmates as slave labor. After Nazi Germany's defeat, the SS
and the NSDAP were judged by the International Military Tribunal
at Nuremberg to be criminal organizations. Ernst Kaltenbrunner,

wrecked off the New Jersey coast, about 2 1/3 hours after passing
over Barnegat Light, due to severe weather, killing 73 of the 76
crewmen and passengers. USS Akron (ZRS-4) was a helium-filled
rigid airship of the U.S. Navy which operated between September
1931 and April 1933. She was the world's first purpose-built
flying aircraft carrier, carrying F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes
which could be launched and recovered while she was in flight.
With an overall length of 785 ft, the Akron and her sister ship
the Macon were among the largest flying objects ever built.
Although the LZ129 Hindenburg and the LZ130 Graf Zeppelin II were
some 18 ft (5.5 m) longer and slightly more voluminous, the two
German airships were filled with hydrogen, so the US Navy craft
still hold the world record for helium-filled airships. The Akron
was destroyed in a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey on the
morning of 4 April 1933, killing 73 of the 76 crewmen and
passengers. This accident involved the greatest loss of life in
any airship crash. Akron's loss spelled the beginning of the end
for the rigid airship in the US Navy, especially since one of her
leading proponents, Rear Admiral William A. Moffett, was killed
with 72 other men. As President Roosevelt commented afterward:
"The loss of the Akron with her crew of gallant officers and
men is a national disaster. I grieve with the Nation and
especially with the wives and families of the men who were lost.
Ships can be replaced, but the Nation can ill afford to lose such
men as Rear Admiral William A. Moffett and his shipmates who died

series "Fernwood Tonight". He also did a comedy album
with Earle Doud, Henry The First, featuring Mars doing an uncanny
Henry Kissinger impression. He appeared in Peter Bogdanovich's
What's Up Doc? (1972), and Woody Allen's Radio Days (1987), and
Shadows and Fog (1990). Mars appeared in two seasons of Malcolm in
the Middle as Otto Mannkusser, Francis's well-meaning but
dimwitted boss and a German immigrant who owns a dude ranch. He
voiced King Triton, Ariel's father, in the 1989 Disney animated
film The Little Mermaid and its sequel, as well as its companion
television series, and the Kingdom Hearts series. He also did
several other animated voice-over film roles such as Littlefoot's
grandfather in the Land Before Time series (up to 2008) and that
of Professor Screweyes in We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (1993),
and King Colbert (Prince Cornelius's father) in Thumbelina (1994).
Kenneth Mars died of pancreatic cancer in Granada Hills,
California at the age of 75. His remains were cremated, and his

Yorktown (CV-5): -- USS Yorktown (CV-5), an aircraft carrier that
served in the United States Navy during World War II, is launched
by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. It would be
commissioned at the Naval Station Norfolk (NS Norfolk), Norfolk,
Virginia on September 30, 1937, with Captain Ernest D. McWhorter
in command. Named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, she was
the lead ship of the Yorktown class, which was designed on the
basis of lessons learned from operations with the converted
battlecruisers of the Lexington class and the smaller
purpose-built USS Ranger. Yorktown was at port in Norfolk during
the attack on Pearl Harbor, having just completed a patrol of the
Atlantic Ocean. She then sailed to San Diego in late December 1941
and was incorporated as the flagship of Task Force 17. Together
with the carrier Lexington, she successfully attacked Japanese
shipping off the east coast of New Guinea in early March 1942. Her
aircraft sank or damaged several warships supporting the invasion
of Tulagi in early May. Yorktown rendezvoused with Lexington in
the Coral Sea and attempted to stop the invasion of Port Moresby,
Papua New Guinea. They sank the light aircraft carrier Shoho on
May 7, during the Battle of the Coral Sea, but did not encounter
the main Japanese force of the carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku until
the next day. Aircraft from Lexington and Yorktown badly damaged
Shokaku, but the Japanese aircraft critically damaged Lexington
(which was later scuttled), and damaged Yorktown. Despite the
damage suffered, Yorktown was able to return to Hawaii. Although
estimates were that the damage would take two weeks to repair,
Yorktown put to sea only 72 hours after entering drydock at Pearl
Harbor, which meant that she was available for the next
confrontation with the Japanese. Yorktown played an important part
in the Battle of Midway in early June. Yorktown's aircraft played
crucial roles in sinking two Japanese fleet carriers. Yorktown
also absorbed both Japanese aerial counterattacks at Midway which
otherwise would have been directed at the carriers USS Enterprise
and Hornet. On June 4, during the Battle of Midway, Japanese
aircraft crippled Yorktown. She lost all power and developed a
23-degree list to port. Salvage efforts on Yorktown were
encouraging, and she was taken in tow by USS Vireo. In the late
afternoon of 6 June, the Japanese submarine I-168 fired a salvo of
torpedoes, two of which struck Yorktown, and a third sinking the
destroyer USS Hammann, which had been providing auxiliary power to
Yorktown. With further salvage efforts deemed hopeless, the
remaining repair crews were evacuated from Yorktown, which sank on
the morning of June 7. The wreck of Yorktown was located in May

industrialization, collectivization, and war compensation led to a
severe decline in living standards. In imitation of Stalin's KGB,
the Rakosi government established a secret political police, the
AVH, to enforce the new regime. In the ensuing purges
approximately 350,000 officials and intellectuals were imprisoned
or executed from 1948 to 1956. Many freethinkers, democrats, and
Horthy-era dignitaries were secretly arrested and extrajudicially
interned in domestic and foreign Gulags. Some 600,000 Hungarians
were deported to Soviet labor camps, where at least 200,000 died.

English musician, best known as the guitarist and backing vocalist
in the progressive rock band Yes across three stints since 1970,
is #born Stephen James Howe in Holloway, North London, Howe
developed an interest in the guitar and began to learn the
instrument himself at age 12. He embarked on a music career in
1964, first playing in several London-based blues, covers, and
psychedelic rock bands for six years, including the Syndicats,
Tomorrow, and Bodast. Upon joining Yes in 1970, Howe helped to
change the band's musical direction, leading to more commercial
and critical success. His blend of acoustic and electric guitar
helped shape the sound of the band. Many of their best-known songs
were co-written by Howe, who remained with the band until they
briefly disbanded in 1981. Howe returned to the group in 1990 for
two years and has remained a full-time member since 1995. After
Alan White's death in 2022, he is the longest-serving member of
the band currently active. Howe achieved further success in the
1980s and beyond as a member of the rock bands Asia, GTR, and
Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe. He has also had a prolific solo
career, releasing 20 solo albums that achieved varied levels of
success, and collaborating with artists such as Frankie Goes to
Hollywood, Martin Taylor, and Queen. He continues to perform with
Yes, as a member of his jazz group, The Steve Howe Trio, and as a
solo act. In April 2017, Howe was inducted into the Rock and Roll

Luther King Jr., American Baptist minister and activist, the most
visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement (b.
January 15, 1929) #dies when he was assassinated by James Earl Ray
on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. He is buried at The Martin
Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
King's death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Ray, who
fled the country, was arrested two months later at London Heathrow
Airport. Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison for King's
murder, and died in 1998 from hepatitis while serving his
sentence. King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal Of
Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Jr.
Day was established as a holiday in numerous cities and states
beginning in 1971, and as a U.S. federal holiday observed on the
third Monday of every January in 1986. Hundreds of streets in the
U.S. have been renamed in his honor, and a county in Washington
State was also rededicated for him. The Martin Luther King Jr.
Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated
in 2011. Martin Luther King Jr. was born Michael King Jr. in
Atlanta, Georgia. He is best known for his role in the advancement
of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil
disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the
nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. King became a civil rights
activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus
boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With
the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation
in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963
protests in Birmingham, Alabama. He also helped to organize the
1963 March On Washington, where he delivered his famous "I
Have a Dream" speech. On October 14, 1964, King received the
Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through
nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped to organize the Selma to
Montgomery marches, and the following year he and the SCLC took
the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In
the final years of his life, he expanded his focus to include
opposition towards poverty and the Vietnam War, alienating many of
his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond
Vietnam". In 1968, King was planning a national occupation of
Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, which
he was to have led were it not for his assassination.

In The United States: The Assassination Of Martin Luther King,
Jr.: Robert F. Kennedy's "On The Death Of Martin Luther King,
Jr." Speech: -- On April 4, 1968, during an Indianapolis,
Indiana rally for his presidential campaign, attended by a large
number of African Americans, Robert F. Kennedy, despite
suggestions he shouldn't appear at all, decided to proceed and
announce the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., to a group
unaware that the killing had taken place. His remarks were: "I
have bad news for you, for all of our fellow citizens, and people
who love peace all over the world, and that is that Martin Luther
King was shot and killed tonight. Martin Luther King dedicated his
life to love and to justice for his fellow human beings, and he
died because of that effort. In this difficult day, in this
difficult time for the United States, it is perhaps well to ask
what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move
in. For those of you who are black - considering the evidence
there evidently is that there were white people who were
responsible - you can be filled with bitterness, with hatred, and
a desire for revenge. We can move in that direction as a country,
in great polarization - black people amongst black, white people
amongst white, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can
make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand and to
comprehend, and to replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed
that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand with
compassion and love. For those of you who are black and are
tempted to be filled with hatred and distrust at the injustice of
such an act, against all white people, I can only say that I feel
in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my
family killed, but he was killed by a white man. But we have to
make an effort in the United States, we have to make an effort to
understand, to go beyond these rather difficult times. My favorite
poet was Aeschylus. He wrote: 'In our sleep, pain which cannot
forget falls drop by drop upon the heart until, in our own
despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of
God.' What we need in the United States is not division; what we
need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the
United States is not violence or lawlessness; but love and wisdom,
and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward
those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white
or they be black. So I shall ask you tonight to return home, to
say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King, that's true,
but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country, which
all of us love - a prayer for understanding and that compassion of
which I spoke. We can do well in this country. We will have
difficult times; we've had difficult times in the past; we will
have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence;
it is not the end of lawlessness; it is not the end of disorder.
But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of
black people in this country want to live together, want to
improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human
beings who abide in our land. Let us dedicate ourselves to what
the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man
and make gentle the life of this world. Let us dedicate ourselves
to that, and say a prayer for our country and for our people."

man trying to swim away with a helicopter after him, first you saw
him wallowing along in the water like a porpoise, then you saw him
through the helicopters gunsights, then he was full of holes and
the sea round him turned pink and he sank as suddenly as though
the holes had let in the water, audience shouting with laughter
when he sank. then you saw a lifeboat full of children with a
helicopter hovering over it. there was a middle-aged woman might
have been a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little boy about
three years old in her arms. little boy screaming with fright and
hiding his head between her breasts as if he was trying to burrow
right into her and the woman putting her arms round him and
comforting him although she was blue with fright herself, all the
time covering him up as much as possible as if she thought her
arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted a
20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to
matchwood. then there was a wonderful shot of a child's arm going
up up up right up into the air a helicopter with a camera in its
nose must have followed it up and there was a lot of applause from
the party seats but a woman down in the prole part of the house
suddenly started kicking up a fuss and shouting they didnt oughter
of showed it not in front of kids they didnt it aint right not in
front of kids it aint until the police turned her turned her out i
dont suppose anything happened to her nobody cares what the proles
